Even if BIP is a typical project for universities, some aspects of environmental sustainability can be considered a meeting point between students and pupils of a wider age spectrum, as they are visible also in the educational programs of schools from Primary School onwards in Italy, but also in other EU countries. The meeting point will be sharing questions/reflections on environmental sustainability from schools as an opportunity to calibrate the contents of specific parts of the BIP lectures. The organisation of a BIP on this theme in 2025, with the University of Trento Erasmus+ as partner hosting and a university researcher expert in sustainability as coordinator, is an opportunity to demonstrate that a more vertical interaction can be a resource in the educational process, thanks to the involvement of a variety of educational bodies. The acronym kid+ indicates involvement from primary school onwards and, therefore, is visible in the abbreviation.
The institutions collaborating are:
Collegio Arcivescovile, Trento, Italy
Babite School, Latvia
Scoala Gimnasiala n.30 Timisoara, Romania
Liceul Tehnologic Ion I.C. Bratianu Timisoara, Romania
Colegiul Tehnic Batthyany Ignac, Gheorgheni, Romania
The school's desire is to start a process that can lead to the creation of a vertical curriculum of sustainability that begins from primary school and arrives at the end of secondary school, to highlight all the projects already in place and to think about future projects. This activity aligns perfectly with the civic education paths for citizenship that the institutes are developing, and they can take advantage of the interactions with the universities involved in this BIP. From an administrative point of view, the project is managed by the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering of the University of Trento. The project, as it is structured, can be defined as an “extended” summer school, integrated with some activities preceding and following the week in which it develops.
The Summer School will begin with an online illustration of the structure of the week in Trento, by the BIP coordinator, followed by his analysis, previously shared, of the questions on the topic of sustainability and the environment received from the classes of the primary and secondary schools involved. The program in place is divided into seminars and technical visits.
The availability of some international experts on issues related to environmental sustainability has been guaranteed. The optimal sequence of interventions and visits is currently being discussed thanks to the creation of an international scientific advisory committee (ISAC) that is supporting the organisation.
